Similar Artists

I used YouTube to see what artists mainly revolved around Daughter's tracks. The most popular results were Ben Howard, Foxes, and XXYYXX

Foxes and XXYYXX seem like electro-pop bands whilst Ben Howard is more of soft folk-rock sound. I decided to compare some of their music videos to see if any inspired me or gave me a better idea of the project I'm taking part in.

XXYYXX - ABOUT YOU

FOXES - HOME

The first thing I noticed about this music video is that it used a lot of close ups, which can be quite disorientating as the full object can't be seen. I like this idea and I'm going to consider suggesting the idea to my group, because it represents a different way of seeing things in day to day life. Just like the last video I looked at, a lot of focus pulls are used, but I doubt we'll be using these in my music video for the same reason as already stated. Things are shown in backward motion in some parts of this video and I really like this, so I'm definitely going to consider suggesting this to my group too. The whole video is from a girl's perspective, which is very similar to hat our group used as an initial idea, so we can look to this video for inspiration.

BEN HOWARD - ONLY LOVE

This video is shockingly similar to Home in the way it also uses focus pulls and disorientating close ups, and slow motion is used too, in a similar manner to XXYYXX's music video. The shots are also in time with the music like in About You too. Some parts show the artist Ben Howard singing himself, which our group doesn't intend to mirror as we want an entirely fictional feel to go with our final product.
This music video includes close ups of flying birds, which is something we want to use in our product to represent freedom. Point of view shots are used a lot in this video, which I've already discussed with my group. We like the idea of this as it would show the world from our main character's perspective.

Daughter

Daughter is the name of the band who wrote and performed the track I have chosen to use for my A level project.

(This is them!)

Daughter is a pop folk band originally from North London, UK. Elena Tonra and Igor Haefeli are members whilst also a real life couple, alongside Remi Aguilella. The band are currently touring Europe together for the first time, but Tonra has toured before with artists such as Ben Howard and Benjamin Francis Leftwich.

The band are signed to Communion Records, and have two EPs, The Wild Youth and His Young Heart.

Daughter don't actually have any videos accompanying their songs currently, but here are some other songs from them:

Genre Research and Applying it to my Project

I've chosen to create a music video to the song Youth by Daughter

I've researched the genre of this song, and it is most commonly known to fit into the folk pop genre. The most common characteristics of folk pop music are:
  • an aim of appealing to a particular sub-culture or ideology
  • an emphasis on craftsmanship rather than formal "artistic" qualities
  • commemorating historical or personal events
  • a particular rhythmic pattern

  • I want my music video to reflect some characteristics of the genre.

I have chosen the main theme of the video to be imagination, which will appeal to a general audience as it is something that everybody has experienced at some point. It will therefore somehow reflect on the characteristics because if it appeals to most people, any particular sub culture will probably find this appealing.

I also intend to include the "emphasis on craftsmanship" in my video by including the fantasy world experienced by my main character. This decision will allow me to get really creative with costume, camera work, mis en scene, props etc. and oppose "formal 'artistic' qualities", reflecting on the characteristic of the genre.

By using the general theme of imagination, my music video will reflect personal events and therefore build on the characteristics of folk pop.

I could develop my product with a rhythmic pattern in mind to help represent the genre, but I think I will purposely not do this. By making my creenplay etc. non-rhythmic and non-patterned, it will contribute more to the random nature of imagination.
